The Silo Hotel on the Cape Town Waterfront has only been open for a few months and it’s already all the rage amongst travelers and locals alike. Travel bloggers and influencers are all jumping at the opportunity to visit this iconic structure in Cape Town’s newest trendy area; The Silo District.
The entire hotel is a work of art, which is fitting as it is also situated above the Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) and home to Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art. From the moment you set foot inside The Silo Hotel, you know a truly unforgettable experience awaits. It’s where first class service meets architectural perfection. A vision that perfectly came to life by architect Thomas Heatherwick, founder and principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio.
One of the most stand-out features is the floor to ceiling windows that are almost in a marquise-diamond shape, each window having 56 panels of glass. These windows allow every room in the hotel to boast beautiful views of Cape Town either looking onto Table Mountain or the harbour.
Every room has its own unique features. The dining room opens up onto a small balcony with a table and chairs where you can enjoy your morning coffee or an afternoon beer over sunset. The living room has a tv, comfy couches and a mirror cabinet where the mini-bar is hidden away. The mini-bar is generously stocked with South African Wine, craft beer, ciders and other refreshing beverages. The best part is, it’s complimentary and restocked daily. The walk-in wardrobe has ample space with a vanity kit, essentials like sunscreen and 2 robes per guest. The main bedroom has a giant, extremely comfortable king bed with linen fit for a royal.
Lastly, the world-famous bathroom… You’re probably wondering why it’s world-famous? Other than the spacious layout and luxurious toiletries, there is the “Instagram bath” that you’ve probably seen on your social feed at least once or you most certainly will as the hotel’s popularity continues to grow. The beautiful freestanding bath right in front of the bulging window overlooking the waterfront and harbour is enough to make you feel like a movie star. Add a glass of red and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have multiple of those “there’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be” moments.
If you are finally ready to leave your room for the first time, the hotel has a lot more to offer. The rooftop bar and pool is an absolute must-do. You will not get better 360-degree unobstructed views of Cape Town anywhere else. The bar itself is charming with the option of a table or lounge area. The infinity pool is extraordinary, once again thanks to the beautiful Table Mountain as backdrop. A big plus about the rooftop area is that it’s only open to hotel guests, meaning it’s never too crowded.
Then there is the hugely popular Granary Cafe serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The complimentary breakfast is one of the best hotel breakfasts you have ever seen and experienced. Another favourite is the Willaston Bar for a cocktail before dinner. A beautiful bar with a warm atmosphere and friendly bartenders.
Thanks to The Silo hotel, a whole new trendy area has emerged from its surroundings where you can find cool coffee spots, contemporary restaurants and other artsy stores with the promise of many more popping up. Conveniently it’s also just a short ride away from the CBD. It’s truly a welcome addition to the already beautiful city of Cape Town attracting young professionals, edgy travellers, artists and art and architecture lovers for the ultimate “treat yo’self” experience.
